SSH Open Competition Expand 2026

The SSH Open Competition Expand funds innovative, curiosity-driven research into research questions of a primarily social sciences and/or humanities nature, without any thematic restrictions. There must be a clear research question, a convincing research agenda and an ambition that requires multiple activities, researchers, or areas of expertise. Proposals may be monodisciplinary, multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary in nature. This also includes fundamental scientific research. Expand is intended for researchers who wish to carry out a large-scale research project that makes a substantial contribution to the development of knowledge within the social sciences and humanities. Applicants must hold a PhD and have a permanent or tenure-track appointment at a Dutch research institution (see the NWO Grant Rules, section 1.1).
