This call invites research into new materials for large-scale energy storage and conversion and new, scalable techniques for efficient and effective production of these materials. The materials ought to align with the timelines (hours/days/weeks) and forms (multi-commodity) desired for the energy transition. Ideally, these materials can be applied close by the energy source, such as within energy generation systems, close by electrical infrastructure and within the process industry. Another potential application area is the built environment, such as housing and office buildings. Moreover, the research should look beyond material properties. The production process of these materials will also need to be developed, including transport and storage logistics. Existing large-scale developments such as surrounding hydrogen are excluded from this call.
